Johan Botha Steps Down As Queensland & Brisbane Heat Coach After Two Seasons

By Ian Ransom (Reuters) – Former South Africa captain Johan Botha has stepped down from his position as head coach of Queensland and the Brisbane Heat, bringing to an end a two-year tenure with the Australian domestic side. Botha still has a year to run on the three-year deal he penned in 2024 but that didn’t deter management from deciding.

In this image, Botha was rewarded with the position of head coach for both Queensland’s Sheffield Shield team and Big Bash League franchise Brisbane Heat in May 2024, replacing Wade Seccombe. Queensland Cricket, meanwhile, touted his international coaching experience and leadership credentials including previous stints in the Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League and ILT20.

In his first season in charge, Queensland made the Sheffield Shield final before struggling to win any silverware across the next two seasons. Australian reports said Queensland Cricket and Botha had a mutual agreement on his exit after on-field results and relationships within the playing group had become topics of concern.

Queensland Cricket chief executive Terry Svenson said the experience Botha brought to developing players in the state system and at the Brisbane Heat set-up was invaluable. But Svenson noted that while the team’s performance objectives were not fully realised, Botha has been instrumental in nurturing the next generation of Queensland cricketers.

The resignation leaves Queensland Cricket seeking a new leader before the domestic season commences. With the position having been vacant for some time, names already linked to it include former Queensland all-rounder Ash Noffke as well as ex-Australia Test captain Tim Paine and current Australian women’s coach Matt Mott.

Botha – who played five Tests, 78 ODIs and 40 T20Is for South Africa before moving to Australia – parts ways with Queensland after a brief but tumultuous coaching stint. Hussey’s departure is another major shift for one of the strongest domestic cricket program in Australia as it looks to rekindle title-winning form again over the coming seasons.
