Mirpur: Bangladesh managed to bat in a disciplined manner to reach 284 for 8 in the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia at the Shere Bangla National Stadium here on Tuesday. After suffering two early losses, the hosts came back strongly and made sure to end up with a decent total on a surface that offered assistance for both pace and spin.

In the third ODI, Australia won the toss and elected to play with Bangla tiger started well but visitors Al chips chose them one by one. But it was the middle order, once again, that gave stability to the innings as several of them built partnerships with others to keep things ticking on the scoreboard. Bangladesh managed a total of 284/8 from their allotment of 50 overs despite losing wickets as they accelerated in the end.

Australia’s bowlers had their phases of control, all-rounder Matthew Renshaw making inroads with his off-spin as well. Renshaw also snaffled a pair of big middle-order wickets to curb the run rate, whilst Bangladesh were really set, in an effort that was significant to slow down momentum.

Australia had a rocky start in pursuit of 285 for victory when Bangladesh’s pace attack immediately struck with the ball. Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman then rattled through the Canadian top-order, as the tourists were left reeling at 16/2 within the first five overs. The dismissals put pressure on an inexperienced Australian batting line-up which was already missing more senior players during the series.

Cooper Connolly and Josh Inglis were trying to rebuild the innings at time of writing after being reduced to 18/2. There was a lot of batting still to come however, and Australia were still very much in the contest, but Bangladesh’s bowlers had made an early breakthrough in front of a spirited home following.

Australia’s first 50-over tour of Bangladesh since 2003 will be an important assignment for both sides as they continue their preparations for ICc events in the months to come. A comprehensive all-round performance will boost Bangladesh, but Australia need to make an enormous recovery if they are to go up 1-0 in the series.
