England face Sri Lanka at Edgbaston as they start their Women’s T20 World Cup 2026

Edgbaston, Birmingham: Hosts England begin the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against a reunited Sri Lanka Women in Group 2 on June 12. The tournament starts with the opening match, where England hopes to command on home soil, benefitted by good recent form supported by a passionate home crowd.

England are one of the teams to beat in their bid for glory. The side, paced by captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has had a number of strong results in preparation for the World Cup including success in series against India and New Zealand. The warm-up also included an impressive practice win, by only one wicket against India and was rounded off nicely with some interesting beacons of form from crucial players to bounce back in its preparations.

The return of skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt — who has recovered from a calf injury and will as usual presumably play an important role with the bat— is also a big plus for England. After some key performances in the past few weeks, young star Alice Capsey has also become one of England’s biggest match-winners.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, come into the game as underdogs but have just enough quality to upset tougher sides. The experienced duo of captain Chamari Athapaththu and the top-order batter Harshitha Samarawickrama will be instrumental in helping them navigate a tough group phase at the Mundial. For Sri Lanka, their batting will have to click as a unit if the touring side are going to cause an upset in the tournament opener.

This opening conflict is likely to be engaged as England tries their uttermost best to win this historic competition right here at home. More than 200,000 tickets for the tournament have already been sold, and there has been a surge in interest around women’s cricket in England so far, making for an exciting opening clash.

England are hot favorites to win this one but Sri Lanka will be keen to upset the apple cart and record what would be one of the tournament’s first notable upsets. Both have an opening game that could provide them with a crucial springboard in the semi-final race.
