Travis Head Ruled Out of Bangladesh Tour, Mitchell Marsh to Miss ODIs as Australia Call Up Todd Murphy
Australia were dealt a double blow before their white-ball tour to Bangladesh, with star batter Travis Head sidelined from the entire tour and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh set to miss the ODI series due to injury. In reply, selectors have decided to bring in off-spinner Todd Murphy ahead of a Test series against Bangladesh where conditions could suit spin.
Head has been rested for the five-match series after a challenging tour with IPL and international commitments. His unavailability creates a huge hole at the top of Australia’s batting that has become such an integral part of their white-ball success with their dynamic game-changer option.
In the same breath, Marsh is still nursing an ankle injury that ruled him out of Australia’s previous ODI series against Pakistan. Although remaining hopeful that the veteran all-rounder will recover in time for the T20I portion of the Bangladesh tour, Cricket Australia said he has been ruled out of their three-match ODI series.
Australia’s squad is already without a number of senior personnel, including Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc all rested in accordance with workload management plans in the face of an action-packed international calendar.
Murphy’s selection is due to Australia’s decision to go with a spin-heavy side in Bangladesh, where spinners have always enjoyed success on slow wickets. The 25-year-old has played Tests for Australia and could now make his white-ball international debut.
With regular captain Marsh not available and Cummins rested, the team is expected to have wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis as its skipper again. During this tour to build up depth ahead of future ICC events, Australia may also hand opportunities for young talents including Liam Scott and Joel Davies.
