Shaheen Afridi Responds to Criticism Over Pakistan Pitch Preparation
Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has defended his team’s pitch preparation methods following complaints over the pitches used for their recent home series. Following Pakistan’s comprehensive series victory, Shaheen dismissed the notion that they had a competitive advantage in being able to prepare spin-friendly wickets by pointing out that preparing pitches to suit conditions is a part of international cricket.
But Shaheen, speaking after the series, stressed that every cricketing country makes pitches suited to its own strengths. He stated that Pakistan’s call to play on pitches supporting their bowling was not different from the tactics of most other top teams worldwide. Skipper also said home advantage has always been an integral part of international cricket and no team should begrudge the local conditions.
The Pakistan captain said that the pitches were tailored to aid his team’s spinners and sparingly allow the opposition to score. Pakistan’s bowlers controlled match after match, writing almost all of the series script for the hosts and this strategy worked. Shaheen is also considered poor according to tactical planning, just like when other teams chose to follow the same plan by preparing appropriate pitches.
Pitch preparation: The subject of pitch preparation has been a hotly discussed topic time and again in international cricket, with plenty of teams being accused of crafting pitches to suit their strengths. Pakistan has often spoken about tailoring pitches by opponent and match situation; on home turfs where conditions can dramatically shift game outcomes.
Now with the series win, Pakistan would mostly want to take that momentum and keep fine-tuning their setup through coming international engagements. Shaheen’s remarks highlight the conviction within the team that intentional pitch preparation is still a legitimate and useful part of today’s cricket, provided it remains within the laws.
