Kane Williamson Retires from International Cricket, Bringing Curtain Down on a Glittering Career
Kane Williamson is one of the most gifted and talented batters and leaders to ever represent New Zealand at international level but we have confirmation that he has an announcement: Williamson retires from International cricket ending his 16-year journey. The 35-year-old applied for leave amid New Zealand’s latest Test series against England, and announced he felt the time was right to retire from international cricket.
Williamson retires as the leading international run-scorer for New Zealand with over 19,000 runs in all formats. He played 110 Tests, 175 ODIs and 93 T20 internationals in an international career spanning over two decades. He scored 9,515 Test runs with 33 hundreds in total and a position amongst the game’s modern greats.
The right-handed batsman played his first-ever Test match against the India national cricket team back in 2010 where he scored a century on debut. For the next 15 years he became not just the foundation of New Zealand’s batting order but an exemplar of consistency, grace and poise under pressure.
Williamson’s finest hour as captain came in 2021 as he led New Zealand to a maiden ICC World Test Championship Final victory over India – a first major ICC title of any sort for men’s cricket in the country. He also guided the Black Caps to finals in the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2021 T20 World Cup, gaining universal esteem as a leader of men and sportsmanship.
Williamson said in a statement, “I feel fortunate to have been able to retire on my own terms and I am confident the future of NZ Cricket is in great hands. New Zealand head coach Rob Walter was excited with Williamson’s effect, stating the player is a special player and will go a long way into shaping the culture of New Zealand even when he bids farewell from playing.
The retirement of Williamson brings the curtain down on an era not only for New Zealand cricket but also a generation of batters he shared with Virat Kohli and Joe Root– Steve Smith in the so-called “Fab Four”. Williamson departs the international arena intent on legacy: excellence, humility and memories that will never fade.
