Sophie Luff’s Heroics Guide Somerset to Thrilling Victory Over Surrey

Somerset captain Sophie Luff with a career-best unbeaten 82 took her side from defeat to victory in the Vitality Blast at the Kia Oval, hitting a superb match-winning century on Thursday night as they beat Surrey by an incredible four wickets. The win moved Somerset level on points at the summit with defending champions Surrey.

Somerset won the toss, elected to field and had an excellent first hour with the ball. A left-arm spinner, Olivia Barnes led from there with a superb(3 for 21). Barnes made an immediate impact, pinning Kira Chathli with her very first ball and having Bryony Smith and Laura Harris depart in quick succession to leave Surrey on 60 for 4.

However, Surrey steadied themselves through an unbroken stand of 103 from Alice Davidson-Richards and Jemima Spence. Davidson-Richards added 24 and Spence played the innings of her life with an eye-catching 51 run from just 35 balls not out. In her first half-century in T20 cricket, she was particularly destructive at times as Surrey reached 153 for 5. On the other end, Alice Monaghan also kept up the late charge with a rapid 20 not out.

In reply, Somerset started with aggression as Bex Odgers pierced the field for a number of early boundaries. But Surrey struck back, having the visitors at 59 for 4. Seamer Alice Monaghan (3 for 24) bowled Somerset close home with her career-best figures.

Sophie Luff, the captain on a war path with wickets tumbling around her. With an air of authority and calmness, her powerful stroke play was supplemented with smart running between the wickets. Luff scored her third fifty in four Vitality Blast matches going on to make an unbeaten 82 from 53 balls, anchoring the innings superbly.

Luff received aid from No.5 Chloe Skelton with 11 runs, as Somerset continued to drive towards the target. Skelton fell to Hayes late in the innings – however the total was achievable. The contest was concluded in style as Ruby Davis hit two back-to-back fours off Bryony Smith to seal the game with 3 balls left.

However, Luff’s scintillating innings ultimately proved to be the difference in a closely-fought contest, inflicting Surrey’s first defeat of the competition and confirming Somerset as serious challengers for the trophy this term.
